Chameleons are multi-reflective paints, mainly used in the field of tuning and painting on cars and motorcycles. There are chameleon paints with two or more colours (up to 7 colours!) and various types, grouped into 2 ranges: STANDARD (18 colours) and EXTREM (16 colours).
Also called «colorshift» , «flip-flop», «beetle» or even «harlequin», these unusual paints have three main qualities :
- Maximum durability, thanks to total resistance to temperature or UV light.
- Extremely easy to apply, simple and without major difficulties
- And of course, an effective effect to stand out, always visually surprising and timeless, no matter what is said.
What is the difference between the Standard and Extrem ranges ?
Extrem paints are more expensive and have brighter colours and more radical colour changes. Standard paints are efficient and economical.
Composition of Chamaleon paint :
Various classic formulations, which use dyes and colourants, the color-change effect dyes, are essentially composed of a binder and special pearlescent pigments. The perceived colour is the result of the reflection of light on the flake.
How it works :
The impression of the colour "traveling" occurs gradually as the point of view is moved and the angle of observation is changed :
For example, the different colours can be perceived as follows :
- from 60 to 120° : perception of the major colour(s) : example Blue and Red
- from 0 to 30° or from 120 to 180°: perception of secondary colours : examples Gold or Green.
The application of Chameleon paint :
On a car as on a motorcycle, chameleon paint is applied with a spray gun, starting from a pure black undercoat. The thin coats of chameleon paint follow one another to gradually cover the black background with the micro pearlescent pigments, until the car or motorcycle is completely covered. With 4 or 5 thin coats, an intense chameleon effect paint is obtained.
Requirements for chameleon paint :
For a complete car : 2 L pure on average.
For motorcycle paint : 500 ml diluted up to 1 L pure.
For a bicycle : 250 ml (provided you don't spill any)
Chameleons are paints with spectacular colour changing effects. In a dedicated tutorial explaining in detail how to paint a chameleon painting: despite their very special characteristics and high prices, they are remarkably easy paints to apply and allow all types of novice or specialist painters to succeed in their chameleon painting project without difficulty.
The basic steps to achieve a chameleon effect are as follows: Black Base (mandatory), then chameleon paint in several very thin layers until the black background is completely covered, then the third and final step, varnish.
As the Chameleon effect is coming back into fashion, after a period of disgrace during which it was considered old-fashioned, there has been an upsurge in demand for the Chameleon spray paint can which allows absolutely anyone, and especially those without professional equipment, to paint a bike or a motorcycle with this fabulous multi-reflection color effect.
