Body polishing and buffing are surface treatment techniques that consist of a mechanical and rotary action at high speed to perfect the surface condition and especially to raise the level of shine.
Sometimes, body polishing is applied to other materials and surfaces, such as resin or even metal. Most often, it is a matter of polishing a paint: the operation aims at removing minor defects and repairing gloss defects.
In the field of bodywork, we practice the polishing and buffing of bodywork or rims, which in reality is a buffing of surface topcoats or 2K paints.
For the rims, it is a question of polishing with a very fine abrasive, the surface metal, within the framework of the repair, following a shock or scratches : these polished rims are more and more common in the modern vehicles.
To perfect the appearance of a topcoat and to have a maximum shine or to recover the shine of topcoat that has been badly done, buffing is also a common practice in the professional body shop and it allows to deliver a customer with an optimal quality of work by saving time and consumables.
The buffing of the topcoat is a process which is articulated in several stages, with the use of abrasive grain increasing in terms of fineness : once the zone to be repaired or corrected is identified, it will be finely sanded to remove the defect which can be either a grain or an "orange peel" for example.
It is then in 2 or 3 successive steps that we will increase the fineness and change abrasives to use sheep wool, polishing discs and other buffing foams, which serve to raise the temperature, soften the shiny coat and smooth its surface.
The final action will be the buffing with a black foam.
Whether you are a hobbyist or a professional, the equipment required to buff a car is quite accessible and the techniques for polishing and buffing a car are easily understood by everyone. We describe them in detail on our blog, which we invite you to check out. Manual polishing is possible, but it will take some time and effort. You can save yourself this laborious work by acquiring a standard size polisher, for complete bodies, or a mini size for small defects.
Stardust offers a mini polisher + mini sander kit to quickly repair micro defects after painting.
A grain ? A dust ? Or even a hair stuck in the topcoat you just applied ? No need to sand or re-varnish everything, nor to get out the polishing machines : with the Stardust mini sander and its mini polisher, equipped with a 50 mm diameter mini sanding disc and 75 mm mini polishing foam, it is now possible to correct defects in less than ten minutes on a perfectly dry surface.
Sheep wool and foam do not have any abrasive action : they simply serve to make the buffing paste work. Thanks to the abrasive microparticles, which are so fine that they are nano-sized, the polishing action changes the surface condition on a microscopic scale, leveling and removing the micro-waves of the topcoat. A glossy surface is always an extremely smooth surface, while on the contrary, a matte surface is hardly able to reflect light, because when observed under a microscope, one can see a completely uneven surface.
