Pinstriping paint and brushes 

Among the various art forms and techniques existing to personalize the bodyworks, one of the best known specialties is Pinstriping. It is « the art of lines », the mastery of the application of very fine lines of paint or vinyl stickers.

This technique is mainly used for the decoration of vehicles (cars, motorbikes, scooters ...) but also for emphasizing all decorative objects. The discipline is carried out freehand with special brushes by painters doing bodyworks and helmets customisation works.

Pinstriping : origin and culture

The paints dedicated to this technique are very particular: they are « fat », thick, shiny, have a good coverage and dry slowly. They are applied to sanded paints before varnishing and sometimes directly to varnished bodyworks.

In bodywork, the Pinstriping paint lines are applied to the support using a special pinstriping brush, allowing you to draw long straight lines, or even overlapping and curved designs (for example criss-crossed flames patterns « flamming »). The origins of Pinstriping art

Did you know that line art has been practiced for centuries ? The carriages were already decorated with this technique ! Then, in the prewar period, the lines were applied freehand by the workers on the vehicle production lines.

During the war, Pinstripping became a way to customize, especially on war planes. And then this neglected art was continued by the « customization » fans and has left its mark until now.

It is the expression of the rebellion against conformism in the fifties. In the world of Customization paint, the personalization of motorcycles and the culture of Hot Rod form a creative movement that originated in California, and which spreads like wildfire across the USA, then the world. Von Dutch is considered the father of Pinstriping, alongside other pioneers like Ed “Big Daddy” Roth, or Tommy “The Greek” Hrones.

The practice of pinstriping requires great dexterity and concentration, to be able to draw freehand perfect lines and symmetrical patterns. The rumour has it that curiously, Von Dutch, who was not famous for his sobriety, excelled in his art in the middle of the night, when he had drunk and smoked a lot !
