This type of paint is a true specialty. Some helmets made by custom artists are true works of art, and have required dozens of hours of work.
These small surfaces often gather marvels of ingenuity in terms of masking (applying adhesives) and pinstriping techniques, but also many special effects, such as gold leaf technique, holographic flakes, chrome, marbling, etc.
Discover our different special kits: composed of opaque, metallic and fluorescent paints, but also topcoats and accessories. You can choose from a variety of kit sizes. Each offer proposes several colour ranges (to choose from), always in small format of 125ml.
Helmet painting is done through an airbrush or a spray gun. It’s a job that requires a great deal of precision, which allows a lot of freedom and originality in the choice of decoration and colours. Check out our helmet paint kit and tips on how to easily make a helmet.
The truth is there is no legislation on this subject and there are no binding standards.
Just use bodywork paints. These can be water-based (as our Stardust acrylic paint range) or solvent-based (Graphic and Sparkle ranges).
Today, there are no lead-containing paint (it’s forbidden) and therefore no paint can cause inconvenience in the event of a motorcycle accident and having a series of X-ray: the injured person must keep his helmet while sent to the X-ray, and lead prevents X-rays from passing through.
However, can the helmet warranty be cancelled in case of a custom paint job?
Absolutely. Once a helmet has been modified, the manufacturer can completely deny any responsibility for this reason regardless of the paint used.
There are several aspects that make it difficult and more complicated to paint on a motorcycle/scooter helmet: The first of these is masking the rubbers and foams, which is particularly delicate.
Then, because of the helmet spherical shape, it’s difficult to apply flat adhesives over the entire surface without obtaining folds.
Fortunately, the thin adhesive bands we use are quite flexible.
Tips and advice:
To prevent the bands from coming off and to keep their curved shapes, even on sharp angles: pass a flame or heat gun on the surface and they will keep their shape without coming off.
A very practical product for customizing helmets: the binder/transparent base, which acts as an interlayer protection: for example, at the end of a work day, to protect the different paint coats and complex graphics, it’s useful to apply a transparent coat on the surface as a protective layer. This invisible layer can be sanded the next day without damaging the decoration. On the other hand, it’s a colourless and transparent product, very useful and ultra fine, which does not create excess thickness and dries very quickly.
This transparent base can be used at the lines intersection: where the lines cross, the transparent binder prevents the paint from passing between the adhesives.
Minimize.
