They are preliminary steps to the actual painting of a bicycle, however they are only inevitable in the following cases :
- unsmooth surfaces, puttied...
- unpainted surface, with a raw material (metal, carbon, plastic).
Not mandatory ? Yes, it is ! In most cases, you paint directly over the old background (original varnish). A light sanding is enough to recreate the adhesion before covering.
Never strip the frame in any way whatsoever: this would be a difficult and laborious job, and would then require redoing the entire application of the primer coats.
Promoting Adhesion
A first family of primers exists to create a chemical bond with the substrate, and therefore to eliminate any risk of flaking or peeling of the paint.
It is very important to use an adhesion primer specific to each material : it is for example difficult to adhere well on aluminium or carbon.
Creating a perfect surface
After a light repair, filling, or sealing a fracture of a bicycle frame with carbon fiber, resin, and putty, one should sand. And what you get then is far from being smooth and perfect enough to be painted as is.
This is where surface primers come in : they level, fill, fill in micro-scratches, or small differences in level. They are called "filler" or even "resurfacer".
These bike primers are very easy to be sanded and create perfect, flat surfaces that are ready to receive the bike paint.
The coarser you sand, the faster you sand: therefore, use the most aggressive sanding sheets for the lower layers (resin, putty).
Sanding too coarse leaves marks: the visible limit of the sanding marks disappears at P320, so the primer must be sanded with P320.
If you sand too fine, you will get more adhesion: Therefore, you must respect the technical data sheets, use the right grain and do not sand too fine. For paints and varnishes, use P500.
They are necessary to purify the surface state, to remove all invisible contaminants, greases and silicones, to allow a flawless paint.
Thinning and cleaning products are also useful for spray painting.
