A quality professional varnish is necessarily a two-component finish (Varnish + Hardener ): This allows for chemical hardening rather than air drying, and creates a harder material at the core. This protects the bike's decoration and varnish from scratching, rubbing, abrasion, detergents or petrol.
Our recommendations for finishes suitable for cycling :
A good product must be able to withstand shocks, scratches, stone chips and bad weather without changing its appearance over the years and without cracking.
It must also be able to cover the stickers with a sufficient thickness, without applying a large number of coats : The ultra high solid (UHS) ranges allow this.
Find our selections and advice below.
Our selected finishes in this category are tried and tested : directly from the world of bodywork, they are especially suitable for all cycling, racing and mountain bike disciplines. Our formulas combine the maximum of qualities and currently represent the most resistant products applicable to the gun that are in the state of our knowledge.
Their final dry coat is 50µm thick, which represents a negligible weight, but an unstoppable protection for the paint and the frame.
Our advice for the best varnishes for bike paints :
> WET SPEED varnish : (high thickness, fast drying, maximum filling power, high gloss, easy application, high resistance)
> CERASTAR ceramic varnish (scratch-resistant, extremely hard and robust, high gloss and excellent UV and weather protection)
The nature and qualities of our varnishes :
- Ultra High Solid Content (UHS)
- excellent natural protection against ultraviolet rays
- Long-lasting gloss beyond 10 years for gloss varnishes
- high strength and thickness
- excellent flexibility to resist splinters and cracks
These are polyester, polyurethane or new polymer family formulas. It is not possible to use epoxy varnishes for bicycles, as epoxy varnishes have poor resistance to UVs.
The varnishing is the final but also the most delicate phase.
First of all, mix well and leave to settle for 5 minutes.
Spray two coats, with 10 minutes waiting between each one.
Watch the distance to the bike frame and the speed.
The coats of varnish must overlap.
The first coat should be moderate in thickness, while the second, being the final coat, should be quite glossy.
To know if you have applied the right thickness, look at the surface of the varnish : it should be glossy but with slight waves. In 5 minutes, the surface will smooth and soften.
If the surface is glossy just after spraying, there is a good chance that drips will appear.
It can be glossy, satin, or matt (this is the degree of gloss). The varnish can also have aspects (phosphorescent, pearly crystal, candy, to color a carbon fibre...), or special properties (flexible, ceramic, anti UV).
