Car paints for brake caliper are 1K* finishes, resistant not only to temperature (around 300°C) but also to weathering.
They also allow a good direct adhesion on metals, without application of anti-corrosion primer.
The pigments that these paints contain, which are used to give the color, are yellow, green, red, gold, black or aluminum. They have special characteristics that allow them to resist high temperatures without blackening or discoloring.
* mono-component : only one-component paints allow a real resistance to high heat. 2K paints resist well but show their limits around 250°C max.
Whether you work as a hobbyist with spray products or with products in a can with a spray gun, you can easily do this type of brake finishing, after having disassembled the part and the wheel.
1/ The part has an original paint, in more or less good condition. This coating has been done in the factory. You must not strip it, otherwise you will have to redo all the adhesion and anti-corrosion work.
Simply degrease the part well, then lightly sand the surface, to ensure adhesion. Do not remove the paint.
The paint is then applied, in 2 coats. These are finishes, so no clearcoat is necessary.
2/ The brake caliper is in bare metal :
It can be steel or an alloy : after degreasing, we can apply the car paint for brake caliper directly, because it adheres well.
If you want to ensure a high quality work with a long life and a guarantee of adhesion, then you must apply an anti-corrosion primer for metals in a thin coat, it is sufficient, before applying the paint for high temperature brake.
Firstly, if you apply a 2K car paint or similar, the car paint coat may not stand up well to the rapid, high and repeated temperature rises : as a result, blackening, cracking and even blistering will occur.
In addition, conventional colors do not like high temperatures and can simply fade or blacken at temperatures above 150°C.
No. It is optional because these car paints are what we call finishes, final coats. Of course, there is a high temperature spray clearcoat. You may want to further protect the paint or even change its gloss, by putting a matte, satin or gloss clearcoat.
The danger of « burning » the clearcoat is moderate, because the surface temperature is not very high and it never lasts very long.
