►TUTORIAL: HOW TO PAINT A BIKE ?
Professional quality, these products are the same as those used by automotive paints :
« Graphic » series Stardust Bike paints, are « 1K basecoat ».
What does this mean ?
As opposed to « 2K paints » with hardener (2 components), the base paints are thinner, dry faster (30 min compared to several hours for 2K paints), do not run and are 1 component. They must be varnished.
1K basecoats are therefore particularly suitable for fast painting, for « custom » decorations, for the formation of very thin and light dry coats (25µm dry)
How to use Graphic base paints for bikes
Before painting the bike, it must first be painted or primed.
When the bike frame is stripped or raw, then a primer must be applied.
When the bike is already painted, it does not need to be stripped : it only needs to adhere with a light sanding with P500.
The application is done on a sanded and sound base (dry, dust free, degreased) with a few coats or thin « veils », repeated quickly.
The drying time is 30 minutes, and it is important to cover with the final clearcoat before these 30 minutes, if you want the coats to adhere to each other.
Varnishing
Use a professional two-component Spray Bike clearcoat
Apply two coats, no more. Allow 5-10 minutes drying time between coats.
What if you need time to make decorations or apply stickers ?
Two solutions are possible :
- Either apply the stickers directly after 10-15 minutes, then varnish. This is what professional painters do.
Or let it dry, sand with 500, and work without hurrying.
Performance
1 aerosol spray = 0.33 m² in 2 coats.
Caution :
Read the safety data sheets carefully.
Ensure adequate air circulation and wear a mask. Flammable product
Warning !
The final color obtained may depend on the color of the primer :
some colors are semi opaque and give different results depending on a white, gray or black primer
