The term "effect paint" is used for any paint that creates an unusual visual appearance; in the case of the Black Interference effect, it is a product developed exclusively by Stardust®, which consists of a deep black color that is completely transparent and capable of reacting to light, returning a colored reflection that is different from the basic black color (hence the name Interference).
Check out here our tutorial on “How to paint a bike”
The visual aspect
It is a kind of chameleon making the surface go from the black state to the colored state. It is a color made up of 100% of light by the phenomenon of reflection. The appearance of the color on the angles takes place in the presence of a source of direct light (ex: Sun, street lamp...), while in the shade, or with an indirect light (ex: cloudy sky) the surface shows a black color
Color choice:
Is done by email after ordering. Color chart to download in PDF at the bottom of the page.

3 steps, to be done if possible, in a row, with the "wet on wet" technique "Black base >> BI paint >> Clearcoat
BI aerosol kit 2 sprays of black base 1 aerosol of Black Interference paint of your choice 2 aerosols of UHS** clearcoat |
BI kit in a can 250 ml of black base paint*, or 125 ml of Black interference paint* at choice. 800 ml of clearcoat (500 ml of UHS clearcoat, 175 ml of normal hardener, 125 ml of thinner) |
€ : The can kit offers more products, for a better price. The aerosol format has a higher price.
* Pre-diluted solvent-based paint. No mixing required.
** UHS is a superior quality Ultra High Solid, for increased thickness and strength.
Quantity :
The kit is correctly constituted, in order to be able to make the black background, then to apply one or two veils of BI paint, then to make a beautiful varnishing in 2 coats.
A small amount of Black Interference paint is provided : this is normal, because it is necessary to apply a small amount, and not exceed the 2 thin veils *
With the term "veil" we imply ultra thin coat.
Instructions for the application
Step 1/ Preparation of the substrate.
On old paint, sand lightly with P500 paper.
If the old paint is uneven, or very damaged, then apply a primer surfacer in spray or can.
Of course, if the base is bare carbon or bare metal, you must use a suitable primer to allow adhesion : find these primers in our category of primers for bikes.
Degrease and dust off.
If the base is an old, healthy and smooth paint, then simply sand lightly with 500, then paint.
Step 2/ painting the base
Paint the black background with a few thin passes, respecting 1 or 2 minutes interval between each coat. Proceed to step 3 before 30 minutes to maintain the adhesion without sanding
Step 3/ Painting the Black Interference paint :
Apply one or two quick veils. Do not overload, and do not apply too much paint. Before drying, the BI paint shows a wet look more or less similar to what will be the interfering effect after varnishing. It is therefore easy to see if you need to add an extra thin coat. It is of course not possible to go back.
We go directly to the varnishing, except in the case where we want to apply adhesives : we must let the paint dry 20 minutes, apply the adhesives, then varnish.
Step 4/ varnishing
Aerosol version : trigger the hardener, and use the aerosol within 30 minutes.
Can version : Mix 3 parts of varnish with 1 part of hardener. Thin by 5 to 15% max.
Apply two coats at 10 minute intervals. Then let dry 24 hours.
What happens if you apply too much paint ?
If BI paint is applied excessively, it results in a loss of the black background color.
Other types of varnish
You may want to get a matte varnish, instead of glossy, in this case check out our large selection of matte varnishes here
You can also request by email after ordering, that the matte varnish be put on instead of the gloss.
