More info

The Oil Slick effect for bikes is a patina applied manually that produces colours resembling oil spills on the water’s surface. Surfaces coated with the Oil Slick patina have a mirrored chrome appearance combined with a colour shift, perceptible depending on the angle from which the colour is viewed. On the tubular surfaces of a bike frame, this effect produces a triple or quadruple colour shift.

Application

You can refer to our tutorial - How to Paint a Bike

Step 1: Sanding P320

There is no need to strip the surface, and it is not recommended. The sanding should be superficial, allowing for levelling. If there are any stickers, you can sand the clearcoat and then remove the stickers by gently heating them. Afterwards, sand again to level.

Step 2: Apply the Primer

This primer also adheres to metals and carbon. It smooths and levels surfaces. After drying (2 hours), sanding can be done with water and abrasive sheets of P320 then P500 grit to prepare the surface for painting.

Step 3: Apply the Base Paint

The Oil Slick effect patina requires a black or white undercoat, depending on the reference.

The base paint should be applied in 2 or 3 thin coats. The paint must be immediately varnished, using a “wet-on-wet” technique.

Step 4 : Varnishing

Apply a gloss coat. This coat is applied in one pass to create “one layer”. A second coat can be applied after 10 minutes if a satisfactory gloss was not achieved with the first coat. To achieve a mirror-like effect with the Oil Slick patina, a perfectly glossy base is required.

Drying: 1 day for the ceramic version *

Drying: 3 to 4 days for the UHS spray version **

Step 5: Apply the Oil Slick Patina

Place a small amount of product on the glossy, un-sanded, and dust-free surface. Using the sponge, rub with some pressure in a rapid circular motion. Treat a 10 cm area at a time. Smooth out the junctions with lighter rubbing.

Once the bike frame is fully covered with the patina, proceed directly to the final clearcoat.

Stickers can be applied immediately before varnishing.

Step 6: Apply the final Clearcoat

Apply 2 coats with a 7-10 minute interval.

Allow drying and curing for several hours for the ceramic clearcoat, or at least 24 hours for the spray clearcoat**.

* The ceramic clearcoat is two-component.

The mixture is made with one part clearcoat and one part hardener (no dilution).

The mixture has a very short working time: it must be used quickly, within 20 minutes maximum.

** The spray clearcoat is single-use as it is two-component. The red button at the bottom of the spray must be pressed just before use. The button should be properly pressed, fully and repeatedly. Then, shake the aerosol thoroughly.

Durability

The Oil Slick patina is perfectly UV-resistant.

It is protected by an automotive-grade clearcoat, making it highly resistant to scratches and impacts.

The different coats of the Oil Slick effect paint system have an excellent level of adhesion.
