Among the range of varnishes unlike any other, which can be called textured varnishes, there is a particular varnish that we hear more and more about, it is shellac varnish, which gives more matte effect, rubbery texture, like gum.
The surface is very matt and non-slip : it gives the object on which the shellac is applied, a plastic or rubber surface impression. This gum effect varnish is therefore capable of changing the appearance of the object and its material.
Visual impression is paramount today in the world of coatings. In addition, it is not just a visual effect but also a real rubber touch effect. We can then say that it is an effective product to bring added value, a unique and original character to a painted object.
The composition of the product does not contain any plastic component, latex or silicone. It is indeed a classic transparent solvent-based lacquer based on polyurethane, with two components (base + hardener) which is applied with a spray gun. It is during drying that the varnish polymerizes and hardens. After one to two hours, touch drying takes place, while through-drying requires at least 16 to 24 hours. It is only after a complete drying that one can realize by touching this shellac varnish, that the surface really gives a feeling of touching a gum or a kind of rubber. The layer of varnish measures less than a twentieth of a millimeter (50µm) and allows a pleasant contact, in a way non-slip.
The application of this special varnish can be done on potentially any material. Even if the varnish does not have direct adhesion properties on any support, it is easy to use a suitable adhesion primer. The varnish can be tinted: this means that you can simply add a pigment paste (about 10%) to transform the gum varnish into colored lacquer.
Like soft touch varnish, the level of resistance of gum varnish is not extraordinarily high ! It is easy to scratch it, and to damage it because the varnish is soft. The new version from Stardust, the soft touch rubber effect varnish (833X) has remedied this fragility, with the new anti-scratch version. After testing this "anti-scratch" product, we can admit that the result is quite surprising and satisfactory, when we know the weakness of this kind of product.
