Super mattifying varnishes

We use very little or almost no super matte varnishes in the production of matte motorcycles and cars : varnishes and paints, because these are far too “extreme” finishes : these super matte varnishes have a level of shine that reaches zero (classified between 2 and 4°), and for this reason, vehicle manufacturers do not offer them as standard.

It is indeed necessary to offer products that appeal to a majority of people, to absorb the costs of studies and manufacturing. Super matt varnishes are requested by only a very small minority of customers.

To get this kind of finish on your vehicle, you have to contact a body painting specialist, hoping that he will have such a product. It is indeed difficult to find this kind of varnish on the market, because paint manufacturers are as cautious as car manufacturers : Only two matt or satin options at most are offered by the major paint brands.

What is a super matte varnish ?

These special finishes, which can be found on custom vehicle paint projects, or in use on decorative objects or household appliances for example, provide silky effects, "velvet" textures and aspects of surface without any shine. One of their main drawbacks can be a whitening effect. This occurs very slightly and is particularly noticeable on dark or black colored backgrounds.

The other major drawback of a super matte varnish is its sensitivity: their surface being less smooth (when speaking from a microscopic point of view) than glossy varnishes, these super matte varnishes tend to catch all kinds of dirt.* Extrem super matt varnishes always have a destabilizing visual effect, therefore quite effective because they produce an effect that is not new to any manufactured product, on which one unconsciously expects to find a classic glossy effect.

Manufacturing with matting agents

Mattifying or matting additives can reduce the excessive natural shine of a lacquer, paint or varnish. These additives are very light white powders, such as talc or silica, which are incorporated into the products.

The effect of these powders is very drying because they absorb liquids. Mixing these additives is therefore just impossible without adding a good amount of liquid to "wet" the recipe.
