Nitrocellulose resin binder, component of car paintNitrocellulose type paints

Nitrocellulose resin can be part of the composition of solvent-based car paints, since they are made up of solvents and their method of drying and hardening is based on the use of harmful, flammable or toxic solvents.

Products of the past: the first cellulosic resins were developed in the 1920s by automotive manufacturers.
Use: wood, furniture, instruments. The use in the world of bodywork is no longer relevant, except in certain developing countries.
Cellulosic lacquers and varnishes offer the undeniable advantage of rapid drying and are economical.

Nitrocellulose resin binders

Drying quickly on application, it is made of cellulosic lacquers, derived from a chemistry of cotton + nitrates. These paints contain only one component and dry with air, by evaporation. These are glossy lacquers

Cellulosic binders and resins, which are the basis of paints of the same name, unfortunately have drawbacks :
Poor resistance to UVs of the cellulose binder with marked phenomenon of yellowing and a change in color
With air drying without hardener, the finishes remain sensitive to chemicals and temperature.

Famous guitar brands have made extensive use of these nitrocellulose lacquers, for cost reasons, and also for the acoustic qualities of these paints.

Cellulosic automotive paints

You can still find glossy nitrocellulose bases in Morocco, for example when you want to buy Renault paint. These are one-component direct glosses that are quite pleasant and easy to apply.
Today, cellulose-based paints have been abandoned in favor of polyurethane resins and binders, which are finer, more resistant, shinier, more transparent, and easier to polish.
