If you were asked what is the most beautiful and well-known metallic paint, what would you answer ? You would be right if you answered the Metallic Gold paint ! There are a variety of gold paints, with NMP* (non metallic paints) and TMP* (true metallic paints) and we are therefore going to explain to you what the different solutions are, whatever the possible techniques or uses.
Since antiquity, gold metallic paints have been produced using pure metallic powders, obtained from metals resembling gold, such as bronze and alloys of copper and brass. Indeed, no dye or color pigment can mimic the particular reflection of metal better than a metal pigment. In the past, gold metallic paint was limited to the use of gilding waxes, to replace leaf gilding.
Nowadays, thanks to technical progress, metal pigments have been replaced because most of them are subject to oxidation, especially in water-based paints. Today, mica nacres, coated with metal oxide, are mainly used. Thanks to these pearly pigments, all kinds of paints, water-based or solvent-based, with countless golden tones are created.
After metal particles that are easily oxidized and unstable, except in the form of wax, and after gold pearl pigments, which suffer from a lack of covering power and too much transparency, it seems that a new technological innovation has emerged to imitate the precious metal with a pigment.
These are the new colored aluminum pigments. Unlike mother-of-pearl, they have good opacity and are therefore not transparent. Using new deposition processes, aluminum pigments can be colored in such a way as to create metallic gold paints, with economical pigments and with an exceptional golden reflection.
However, the race to who will create the most beautiful metallic gold paint is still not won ! The color having been "solved", there remains a defect: the pigments form a visible metallic pigmentation, whereas in the metallic gold aspect, we seek a smooth and polished surface.
Thanks to Stardust, the famous paint "Gold Premium 8µm", which gives a smooth, lustrous gold effect when applied over a finely sanded undercoat, appears to be the finest metallic gold paint made to date !
A wide variety of pale or warm gold tones can be found in the Stardust gold paint range. The French firm is capable of composing a large number of shades of gold, from white gold to yellow gold ingot.
These colors can be found among the pearly golden ranges BC11, BC53, BC54, BC58, which offer variations in shades depending on the background color. There are also "Liquid Metal" and the new amazing colors made of aluminum: the BC70, 71, 74. This mastery of colors is made possible by the largest collection of rare pigments possessed by the company, which specializes always in the creations and research of special paints.
If you are looking to imitate the appearance of gold bullion, the precious metal in its raw state, know that the appearance can be smooth and polished, but never mirror like golden chrome. Currently, there are 2 solutions (in the world of paint) to create this gold effect capable of returning our own image : 1 – Stardust paint with a chrome effect, coated with yellow 21 or dirty yellow 99 varnish 2 – the silvering process to create a silver mirror which, in the same way, is covered with a transparent colored varnish.
