One of the most used paints in terms of annual tonnage in the world of industrial paint for materials is anti-corrosion paint for metal structures. This can be the frameworks of buildings as well as the structures of industrial buildings, up to the metal structures of large buildings or bridges.
The most widely used material for steel structures is steel. This economical, resistant and relatively flexible metal has almost all the qualities and it has only one weak point, it is its sensitivity to humidity and water. Corrosion is the main factor in the aging and disintegration of steel.
An unprotected metal structure exposed outdoors disappears in a few decades under the effect of rain and humidity, by the phenomenon of oxidation of the metal, which is known under the name of rust. Anti-corrosion paints have zinc oxide pigments or phosphating agents that will prevent or block oxidation.
One of the best examples of the use of this type of painting is the monument The Eiffel Tower.
In addition to its composition, this paint also provides waterproofing against bad weather, and in particular water, acids and other oxidants, thanks to its thickness. It forms like a protective coat around the metal, whether it is steel or other ferrous non-ferrous metal. In maritime environments, oxidation is reinforced by salt spray and very thick layers of paint are regularly added to all exposed structures, which allows the metal to be protected for as long as possible.
Be aware that rust can develop deep under the paint, as long as it is present before being covered by the paint. A good anti-corrosion paint will block this rust by a chemical phenomenon.
Anti-corrosion paints are simple, effective and very economical coatings : they are among the cheapest and most common industrial paints.
Depending on the area, and we can really talk about hundreds of different areas, we will choose a different application method adapted to the conditions and surfaces.
Of course, spray application is the fastest way to apply paint evenly and visually perfect. Application by irritation always generates a certain percentage of paint loss in the form of an aerosol. The paints can also be applied with the roller, the brush or even in dipping trays.
In the world of automotive bodywork, there are already several types. Then come the main areas of industrial paint, where you can find about ten different types of anti-corrosion paint, with different levels of performance, from the simplest to the most complex, with or without hardener.
A distinction is made above all between anti-corrosion paints according to their ability to hang certain metal supports, because different products are needed to simply hang steel, or otherwise more complex metals such as aluminium, galvanized steel, stainless steel...
