Nowadays, chrome paint effects are highly sought after due to their accessibility and ease of application. However, the key question is where and how to use chrome paint ? And more importantly, which type of chrome paint can withstand outdoor conditions, including abrasion, weather exposure, etc. It is essential to distinguish between purely decorative paints (such as GO Chrome) and professional chrome paints, like mirror chrome paint.
It is crucial to use a paint that can be clear coated, as the clearcoat is what provides mechanical resistance to abrasion, as well as protection against chemical attacks, oxidation, and humidity. There is no real concern regarding sunlight exposure since metallized paint effects are composed entirely of metallic pigments without any added color pigments, giving them perfect UV resistance.
When applying mirror-effect chrome paint to an outdoor statue, which will be exposed to cold, rain, humidity, and heat, special care must be taken at every step. From surface preparation and primer application to clearcoating, each layer must adhere perfectly to prevent moisture infiltration. Unlike traditional paints, chrome paints cannot be sanded between layers.
To ensure maximum adhesion, we recommend flame treatment (flaming). Moisture is the primary cause of long-term deterioration when it seeps between the primer and the clearcoat, leading to oxidation of the chrome paint. To prevent this, clearcoat must be applied thoroughly, covering even the edges and the back of the object. Based on our experience, many outdoor statues coated with chrome paint have remained durable for years when properly sealed.
Silvering is not a chrome paint but rather a chemical metallization process using a thin layer of silver. It is well known that silver oxidizes easily under sunlight and humidity. For this reason, it is not recommended for outdoor statues, as its surface would turn yellowish within weeks or months.
However, there are exceptions where silvering can be used outdoors successfully. This is the case when a colored clearcoat is applied in faux tones, such as gold and other metallic shades. In such instances, any yellowing becomes unnoticeable.
Over the past 20 years, acrylic clearcoats have proven to be the most resistant against various environmental aggressors, including weather, friction, impacts, sunlight, heat, and air exposure. Acrylic clearcoats are not limited to water-based formulas; automotive and industrial topcoats also fall into this category. Among them, ceramic clearcoats offer even greater durability.
To maximize the lifespan of an outdoor artwork, we recommend applying multiple layers of high-quality clearcoat. The clearcoat not only enhances gloss and the final finish but also provides critical protection against oxidation, safeguarding both the paint and the surface beneath.
