To sum up what candy painting is for those who have heard of it but aren't sure what it is, candy paint is a multi-layered technique that layers transparent color on a neutral reflective background.
To achieve a very beautiful deep red Candy paint, whether on a car, a motorcycle or a bicycle, the technique is easy.
Before looking at the special and optional techniques, it is good to know the main and traditional technique to obtain a very beautiful Candy red. It is also the simplest, most efficient and most economical process:
Step 1 ► Establish a black background (primer or base paint)
Step 2 ► Apply pure aluminum paint (fine BC60, medium BC1, coarse BC2)
Step 3 ► Apply Candy* red 119 or 08** in 4 layers.
* for a motorcycle, it is possible to use Candy 2C varnish. For a car, it is preferable to use a Candy 1C, to be able to multiply the layers, speed up drying and avoid runs. ** there is little noticeable difference between these 2 main red colors: Candy 119 is slightly more orange, while Candy 08 is slightly more pink.
Let's start with the recommended choices.
Because the success of the color is a matter of technique but also of choice !
It is important to choose a background color (whether pearly or metallic) different or better, opposite to the color of the top layer (the colored transparent layer). The difference in tone will create the whole effect of depth.

The BC9 undercoat is applied on a black base with several levels of coverage (10%, 50%, 100%)
Mix blue and red
Here is the result obtained with a blue pearly undercoat (BC10) covered with Candy Rouge 08 varnish.
For this creation, the artist @atelierjscustom first applied a black background, then applied several layers of blue pearlescent paint. The Candy red WINE 08 varnish was then applied in 3 coats. And here's the result !

The undercoat color can create a custom color tone. However, it is also necessary to take into account the grain size of the undercoat, which can be ultrafine, or on the contrary, large and sparkling.
Mix gold with red
In this case below we have another example of combination between a colored undercoat whose color is different from the Candy varnish: the artist used a gold BC5 diamond base covered with several layers of Candy red 119. We can clearly note the iridescent effect produced by diamond painting.
The result and the quality of the transparency is almost identical whether you choose binder (1C base) or varnish (2C)
It It is important to choose the right undercoat (the background), in particular the type of grain, fine and "silky", or coarse and sparkling.
Black color effect on red Candy
It is usual to see black reflections appear at the angles of the bodywork. This dark and deep appearance is typical of the Candy painting technique, and it appears from 4 or 5 layers of transparent color, whatever the color (red, blue, green...).
Aerosol or paint gun?
Today, there are professional quality aerosols, which allow all users who do not have air compressors and paint guns, to execute Candy paints of quality equal to those produced by paint professionals. custom painting. Here are the aerosol products:
→ black spray base
→ Candy spray undercoat
→ Candy spray varnish
Don't :
►Use a manufacturer tint as an undercoat: these colors are not reflective or shimmery because they contain opaque tints.
►use a base of the same color as the topcoat, as this will reduce the deep color effect.
►Use a pearly white undercoat
►Do not respect the mixing ratios of the concentrated ink: if you put too much, it breaks the effect of transparency, it opacifies but does not allow a regular application.
To get a deep red candy paint, you can honestly use any red. The most beautiful Candy red shades are :
- 119 Rouge Apple : it's a standard red that tends towards orange
- 08 Rouge Wine : it's a deeper red that tends towards pink
- 11 Dark Red : it's a dark red made from a blend
- 87 Cherry Red : it's a very pink red
- 66 Lava Red : c It is a very orange and very bright red.
Certaines couleurs de Candy rouge inhabituelles comme le « CHERRY RED 87 » de Stardust peuvent créer des teintes très intéressantes.
The underlayer, which can be called "the bottom" or "the base", is just as important as the Candy layer.
Its role is to reflect, to bounce the light. However, it also has its influence on the color : if you take a pearly white base, you will not obtain the same dark shade as with a silver aluminum.
You must also take into account the size of mother-of-pearl or pigments: a large choice is offered among the Candy Stardust undercoat range, from aluminum and the finest mother-of-pearl, not forgetting the large Diamond pearls, to glitter paints.
We will describe here undercoats which change from the original aluminum and which create superb finishes.
The most beautiful are the Candy BC60 and BC70 undercoats which are both composed of silver or gold aluminum pigments , ultra-thin and very high-end quality.
We also recommend BC4 (Sparkling Diamond Effect), BC11 (very thin pearly blue).
The BC13 reference, made up of 50µm "Metal flakes" micro , is also a specialty with very interesting results.
