For all those who want to make Candy paint themselves and for the first time, here is an article that talks about the possibility of spray painting Candy paint. Many people who don't own a compressor or a spray gun wonder whether a candy spray can achieve the same quality of finish as a job done by a professional.
First of all, we confirm that the entire Candy technique can be done with an aerosol, with a spray paint, with Candy spray varnish (2C*), the metallic undercoat, the primer, etc. ...
The pressure vessel is practical, fast and quite efficient. We can carry out the phases of paints and primers, with quick coats to replace the fine veils made with the spray gun. The paint is remarkably well applied, especially if we are talking about solvent-based professional paint, which smoothes out during evaporation.
As for the varnish, there are now 2-component aerosols (with hardener), which makes it possible to fill in Candy varnishes. To compare spraying from a plastic nozzle with spraying from a gun seems ridiculous. However, the result is there! We obtain an exceptional shine (with a Pro Stardust product, not a product found in general public stores), a good thickness, and above all, we benefit from a regular varnishing and without orange peel. Of course, you have to show a minimum of dexterity and technique to have a good result !
Here are some practical tips for painting with a candy spray.
Shake the Candy can for 30 seconds. Always keep a distance of 15 cm and keep the spray "straight" in front of the support.
1 - For the metallic base, make thin veils with quick movements and continue until the bottom is completely covered with the Candy undercoat spray paint
2 - For the Candy spray varnish, it is a question of painting in the opposite way: instead of thin and quick veils, you must make a nice thick layer, to avoid any phenomenon of "orange peel" due to to lack. So, with the Candy spray, we're going to slowly apply a thick coat in one round trip. The surface should be wet and shiny.
The aerosol is made up of 2 separate and sealed compartments, so that the product can be kept for several months. It is just before using the varnish that the first compartment will be pierced to release the hardener which will then mix with the varnish.
From this moment, the chemical polymerization reaction will start, which will react and harden the mixture. The mixture remains fluid and sprayable for the first 30 minutes, after which the product begins to gel, then to harden like a plastic. This is called a 2C spray.
In case of orange peel skin :
This is due to a lack of product or too rapid drying due to the temperature. In this case, you will have to wait 24 hours, then sand the surface with 800 with water to smooth and simply iron a coat of varnish.
In the event of drips :
In this case, it is necessary to wait 48 to 72 hours for the thickness of the drop to harden to the core. Then, it is a question of “decapitating” the protuberance with targeted sanding. To avoid sanding the surroundings, use a small eraser, as a wedge, 400 grit sandpaper and water.
