« PPG D8131 UHS Clearcoat is more or less the same as PPG D8173 Premium UHS in terms of quality. The main difference is that it works with PPG's compact system (using a single hardener for primers, bases, and clearcoats)...
The other difference is that D8173 is intended to be used with waterborne paint systems only, whereas I can use D8131 on both waterborne and solvent-based paints...
It's a UHS clearcoat, which I apply in a single pass, with a quick and light coat followed by a full coat, without needing to wait for a 10-minute flash-off...
Yes, I use it on complete cars, and in those cases, I allow 10 minutes between each coat, and I add 10% PPG thinner... »
Surface Preparation
Apply to dry-to-touch 1K hydro basecoat and previously cleaned with a wiping pad.
It is recommended to use the appropriate PPG D837 DX330 Spirit Wipe cleaner – an all-purpose cleaner to be used throughout the painting process.
Application on solvent-based 1K basecoat that has dried for 15-30 minutes or sanded with P500.
How to Mix D8131 Clearcoat
The technical data sheet can be downloaded at the top of this page*
Here are the mixing ratios with UHS hardener and thinner in volume and weight :
► By volume 2:1
D8131 Clearcoat 2 vol + D8254/D8255 1 vol
Add 0.1 vol of thinner (if >30°C or complete car painting)
* 1 vol = 1 volume / 1 part
Find our graduated mixing cups here
► By weight with weighing scale without thinner
These weights are cumulative - DO NOT tare the scale between different additions
Mix ratio without thinner
Quantity of mixed product (RfU) required: 0.1 L
D8131 Clearcoat: pour up to 66.4 g
D8254/D8255 Hardener: pour up to 101g
Mix ratio with thinner
Quantity of mixed product (RfU) required: 0.1L
D8131 Clearcoat: pour up to 64.0 g
D8254/D8255 Hardener: pour up to 97.5 g
Thinner: pour up to 100.4 g
Thinner is used at 0.1 vol only for application temperatures above 30°C or for application on a complete car.
• As with all UHS products, a cold mix can cause application difficulties. It is strongly recommended to use RfU products (Ready for Use) at ambient temperatures above 15°C.
How to Choose Hardener and Thinner
UHS Hardener: Application Temperature
D8254 20-30°C, with low humidity
D8255 > 30°C, with low humidity
Thinner:
For application at temperatures > 30°C and/or large surfaces,
Recommended for high humidity levels
Product Features Ready for Use
Pot-life at 20°C
Pot life at 20°C 1 hour applicable / 90 minutes double viscosity
Viscosity at 20°C: 19-23 s AFNOR4
Adjusting the Spray Gun
Spray gun nozzle: 1.2-1.3 mm
Spray gun pressure: 2 - 2.2 Bars
Application and Flash-off Time Between Coats
PPG D8131 Clearcoat is a UHS clearcoat,
There are 2 possibilities for application
1/ Application in 2 coats
Apply 2 normal coats to achieve a dry film thickness of 50-60 µm (microns). Observe a flash-off time of 5 minutes between coats.
Flash-off/Evaporation Time before baking/IR: 5 minutes
2/ Express Application in "One Visit"
This process increases productivity with quicker application by applying 1 thin/light coat followed by 1 normal coat to achieve a dry film thickness of 50-60 µm.
Apply the first coat to ALL areas to be painted before applying the second coat.
For fewer than 3 elements, observe a flash-off time of 1 minute 30 seconds to 2 minutes.
For 3 elements or more, flash-off is not necessary.
Recommended dry thickness: minimum 50-60 µm
Drying Times for PPG D8131 Clearcoat
- Drying at 60°C* in 15 minutes
- Drying at 40°C* in 40 minutes
- Air drying at 20°C in 8 hours
- Infrared drying approximately 8 minutes (depending on the shade)
* The drying temperatures indicated are substrate temperatures.
More time may be required if this temperature is not reached, depending on the efficiency and size of available equipment (oven).
How to Overcoat with Paint or Primer?
After cooling if force drying (oven, IR), or after air drying.
MANDATORY sanding before recoating to ensure good adhesion. Sanding with P800 (wet) or P400 (dry).
Overcoatable with 2K PU primers or water-based 1K basecoat systems
Polishing and Buffing
After the drying times indicated above and cooling.
If air drying the clearcoat, wait 8 hours at 20°C.
The "blending" process
▪ Prepare the blending area with a soft P3000 sanding pad mounted on a sander.
▪ Do not apply too much clearcoat to the edge of the blending area.
▪ Immediately blend the perimeter of the blending area using the blending thinner
▪ After drying and cooling, polishing can be performed.
Application on flexible plastic substrates and creating textured finishes
Texturizing agents can be used to achieve a textured appearance. For use on flexible substrates*, our flexibilizing additive can be used between 1 and 3 percent.
* Note: Generally in the automotive industry, plastic parts are considered rigid. Even if they may be considered flexible, they are only flexible when disassembled, as they acquire some rigidity once mounted on the bodywork. D8131 clearcoat is naturally flexible and remains so for many years. It is unnecessary to add Flexibilizer in the lower coats, especially in matte basecoats to be clearcoated. It may be useful to soften the clearcoat with the Flexibilizing additive when applying to motorcycle parts or certain very flexible plastic paints, for example, foam-type, mostly from older vehicles.
Rules and Best Practices for Clearcoat Maintenance on Bodywork
When performing high-pressure washing, it is important to take certain precautions, such as not working with a pressure >70 bars and especially maintaining a minimum distance of 20 cm with a temperature not exceeding 50°. Be careful not to perform high-pressure washing too close to weakened areas, with defects, such as impacts or scratches, as washing can further weaken the paint system and promote detachment.
High-pressure cleaning is suitable for removing dust from the vehicle bodywork and also for eliminating soluble dirt deposits non-greasy dirt.
The best way to clean your vehicle is to use a soft brush with a suitable detergent, or to clean your vehicle at a car wash with a roller.
When the clearcoat has been recently applied, it is advisable to wait at least ten days to allow optimal hardening of the clearcoat before proceeding with cleaning.
