> The coverage of a paint is expressed in m² / coat.
Knowing that a paint is made in 2/3 coats we divide the surface by 2 or 3

Yamaha paints diluted : 6 m² / L

Yamaha motorcycle colors : 1K solvent-based basecoat quality

They are professional body paints called 1K basecoat (*2-coat). Their coverage is excellent, they offer a superb fluidity once diluted, and their color ensures maximum resistance to the sun.

3-coat* special colors :

Some 3-coat shades require an additional specific undercoat*: if your color code requires one, our technician will contact you to suggest the first coat colour. A 3-coat colour includes a base color and a transparent colour, to give a more iridescent, luminous and deeper color : special undercoat for Factory colours.

How to apply Yamaha 1K basecoat paint

Being « bi-coat », the paints are a system in 2 coats : base and clearcoat

MIXING of Motorcycle 1K basecoat paint :

Our paint kits are supplied in pure version.
In order to give it the necessary viscosity, add 50-70% of V1 thinner
The 250 and 500 ml cans are already diluted.

Painting your motorcycle, general rules :

1/ The preparation of the motorcycle body (metal or plastic fairings) is the most important step.

As the fairings are already painted, it is important to sand them (without stripping) to be able to adhere. A primer* is only necessary on raw plastic or metallic surfaces, or on old damaged paint.

Sand with 320 and 800 grit paper and water. Rinse and dry.
Not mandatory but recommended if you think the surface is not clean. Degrease (fingerprints, silicone, glue or grease marks): with our degreaser or our mild alcohol: This will remove greasy fingerprints, or hydrocarbons, which could affect the paint finish.
Before applying the paint, use our sticky wiping pad, without pressing.
Paint with a spray gun
A word about «primer » :

Stardust offers a wide range of primers, fillers and surfacers, or to improve adhesion or corrosion resistance

2/ Painting with a spray gun

Paint at 15 - 25°C, with a spray gun equipped with a 1 to 1.5 mm nozzle, with medium air pressure (2.5-3 bars)
Spray 2 to 3 coats at 5 min intervals,
let desolvate during 10-15min, then varnish without waiting more than 15 min, that is to say 30 min after the end of the application, otherwise you risk losing the adhesion

3 / Varnishing of the motorcycle :

The varnishing will bring shine and protection to the Yamaha paint : It is a delicate step during which we must deposit the right amount of clearcoat on the surface of the paint :
The quantity of clearcoat, will evaporate and harden with its hardener, and after complete drying we obtain a dry film of about 50 µm.
It is applied in 2 glossy coats.

Some tips to varnish without orange peel (not enough), and without dripping (too much) and apply the right amount of clearcoat :

- the speed of the arm movement from left to right is neither too slow nor too fast

- the distance to the support is 15 cm

- the pressure is neither too low nor too high

- the angle of the gun is always 90° to the surface

- the temperature is neither too cold nor too hot

- the right waiting time between the two coats (5-8 min)
