Once rare, in recent years matt topcoats have become widespread in colour and finish trends on vehicles from various global car manufacturers. Stardustcolors explains how to achieve a matt or satin bodywork paintwork in the rules of the art.
We are the first to offer a "variance" range of matt varnishes allowing different levels of specular gloss to be obtained, with the lowest level (2°) in terms of gloss up to the highest level (95°). We also present innovative products that allow self-repair for example, but also bodywork varnishes creating "Soft" or "rubber" effects. If you want to discover all these new possibilities, don't hesitate to ask for a brochure.
The repair of scratches on a bodywork is done either with putty and primer, or simply with primer, provided that the scratches are superficial and not very deep. In a dedicated article, we explain step by step how to repair scratches on bodywork paint.
There are scratches that will go through all layers of paint to the sheet metal of the bodywork and will be approximately ½ mm deep, while other scratches have only affected the surface layer of topcoat or paint.
The putty application phase must be followed by sanding with 320 then a filling primer, sanded with 500. This process is essential to obtain a perfectly smooth and suitable surface to receive the paint. The slightest defect would be visible if we did not apply all these steps, because we are talking about paint which measures between 30 and 40 microns thick and a layer of topcoat which measures between 40 and 50 microns thick.
To sum up, there are 4 steps to perform when repairing a scratch on a bodywork: putty, primer, paint and then topcoat.
Bodywork paints are used for all applications where a high level of resistance is required: both professional users and private individuals rely on RAL colour references – Ral paint to order glossy or matt paints, in order to decorate furniture, objects, sculptures, helmets or even bicycles. RAL or PANTONE colours are the best known reference colour charts in the world, however there are other public colour charts widely used in the field of industry and decoration.
It should not be confused with private colour charts belonging to paint brands or paint manufacturers. When we talk about public swatches, we are talking about formulas available to all users. It is therefore recommended to use for your projects colours whose references are RAL or PANTONE, in case you wish to change paint supplier.
