When you want to touch up a part of your car, you need to find the color code for the vehicle's shade. This is a code that designates a paint formula, in a way the recipe that will allow the paint store to reproduce the manufacturer's original color.
It is always very problematic to recognize the color code on a Vin Plate. Here we will tell you how to recognize the color code for each car brand.
If you want to paint your complete vehicle, then probably your body painter will be responsible for finding this color code on your car. But if you decide to save yourself the services of your mechanic, then you will have to find the paint reference yourself. Do not look on the gray card, because neither the color code nor the color name is there. The color code is located on a metal plate (Vin Plate) which is riveted in variable locations and is easily accessible to the body of the car. You can find many references there, and the information varies depending on the brand and can most of the time be confusing. For each brand of car, we tell you where exactly to find this plate where the color code is written.
How is a car paint color code composed?
The color code of an automobile paint is made up of a few letters and a few numbers (between 1 and 4 characters). In general, if the reference you found has more than 5 numbers or letters, then it is likely that it is not the color code of your paint.

079 is the Renault color code and ACIER MET is the color name.
► Driver's door interior
To reproduce the Peugeot paint, our technician must access the formula using a color code. Look for this color code on the body of your Peugeot car. Although the reference for this color can be located in different places on the bodywork, it can generally be found in the interior of the driver's door. It is not always easy to recognize the Peugeot color code at first glance: eliminate all references that are a little too long and note all references that have two or four numbers or letters between them. There's a good chance it's the color code. You can check this simply by contacting us and we can consult the database to confirm that it is indeed the reference of a shade.
► Interior of passenger door
The plate with the color code of your vehicle can usually be found on the bodywork inside the passenger door. If you can't find the plate there, then you will easily find it inside the driver's door or even sometimes in the trunk. The color code is not always easy to recognize: eliminate all references that are a little too complex, too long and isolate all references that have a maximum of 4 or 5 numbers or letters. Some color codes only have 2 numbers, while other more complex ones have two numbers and three letters. There are no rules fixing the matter. ► Interior of the passenger door
The color code is a reference which designates the formula of the Mercedes paint and it is written on a plate fixed to the bodywork. Depending on the model, this plate was located in different locations. Typically, you will find the Mercedes color code plate inside the passenger door. The color reference generally consists of two to four numbers or letters. Here is an example with the photo on this 4x4 model from 2017.
► Driver's door:
Here is where the color code for the Alfa Romeo brand is located: In general, you have to look inside the driver's door. You can find the plate there, with the color code usually located in the upper right corner next to “code color”.
This is usually a three-digit code. However, there are no fixed rules regarding the composition of the color codes of Alfa Romeo paints, in which letters or numbers may appear, with a total of between two and four alphanumeric characters.
► Location of the spare wheel in the trunk.
The location of the color code for Audi paints sometimes varies depending on the model. We invite you to start by looking inside the front doors and if you cannot find the plate there, then look in the rear trunk, near the spare wheel. Once you have found the plate or adhesive, you can look for the color code which usually consists of two to four characters, which can be either letters or numbers. ► Interior of driver's door
For Citroën brand vehicles, you can easily find the Citroën paint color code on a plate, which is generally located in the driver's door opening. There we find the color code, without further indication, which is normally composed of numbers or letters, with a total of two to four characters. If you found a code with five or more characters, know that it is probably not the color code!
In certain Citroën models like the C4, you have to look inside the driver's door, on the body, in the hinge area.
► Opening the front doors of the vehicle
For Ford brand cars, the location of the color code is usually in one of the two front door openings, either the driver's or the passenger's. There you will find a metal plate, or sometimes an adhesive, with a series of references. In general, the Ford paint color code is a short and simple reference. This color code can be composed of numbers or letters and in general, it does not exceed three or four characters.
In some cases, the color code can be as simple as a letter or number. In the following example, the color code is “H”. If you have the slightest doubt, do not hesitate to contact us, our color technicians are at your service.
► Interior of the driver's door
If you have a KIA car and want to know where the paint color code is, then you will usually find it inside, in the driver's door opening, on the body. You must look for a plaque where the references are written. The KIA color code is a reference that is usually very simple and cannot exceed four characters. This is usually a set of numbers or letters. Once you have found this color code, it is easy for you to contact us so that we can mix your KIA paint according to the manufacturer's formula.
► Passenger door on the body
It is not difficult to find the reference for your Opel paint color by looking for it on your vehicle. The color code is made up of a few numbers or a few letters at most and is written at the bottom left of the plate generally attached to the inside of the passenger door. If you find a reference with four, five, six or more numbers, then it is likely that you have the wrong reference, because a paint color code must be a very short reference: a maximum of 3 or 4 alphanumeric characters.
► Rear trunk or trunk
It is common for you to simply find the color code plate in one of the two front door openings, but more generally, the information you are looking for regarding the color code of your SEAT paint can be found at the rear of the vehicle in the trunk. Among all the references that you will find on this plate or this adhesive, there is every chance that the reference of your color is a set of three or four letters or numbers.
► Passenger door interior
There is no hard and fast rule when it comes to color code placement in Toyota cars. Most often, you can find this plate attached to the bodywork inside the passenger door. They have a black plate with various references, including the famous vehicle color reference. With this color code, we can search the database and prepare your Toyota paint. Please note that this reference cannot be made up of more than four or five characters. These can be either letters or numbers, as shown in the attached example.
► Engine compartment
Regarding the color code for BMW paint, you have 2 possibilities depending on the model. In a greater majority, the plate is located in the engine compartment on the right side, otherwise you can look on the interior door pillar. Among all the indications that you will find on the plate, the color code is made up of 3 to 5 letters and/or numbers, as you can see in the example below:
► Doors and engine compartment
The location of the color code for Volkswagen paints may vary. These are in the form of labels, as you can see in the example above. To find this code in the majority of models, it will be in the engine compartment: on the engine mount or on the fuse area or even on the interior pillar of the front doors. If this is not the case, it could be a sticker under the carpet or in the trunk, or even on the side of the spare wheel. This code often consists of letters and numbers and is between 2 and 4 characters long.
