Did you know that transparency, colors and even pearlescent effects can be retained by giving a trendy matte surface finish ? After our answers to the question "Which epoxy resin colorant to use", we tell you how to make matte epoxy resin, which you know, are always pretty shiny.
Often, the shiny reflection is embarrassing and gives a cold and modern style that goes badly with the room and the materials, and interferes with the atmosphere, the style. An absence of reflections, and a low shine, this is called a matte effect, while a low shine is called a satin effect.
We have the choice, but you will see that it is a very limited choice, because the resins are naturally shiny and difficult to modify.
First, we have the possibility offered by the manufacturers to use a matte hardener. Unfortunately, the product is rare and it does not really give the super matte effect that many are looking for, but rather a satin effect.
In two, the polishing to "break" the shine, but the polishing steps are carried out to regain shine.
Three, the mattifying additive : it exists but it is often difficult to mix with viscous products.
And so, in four, here is the best way to create a matte epoxy resin, after having colored and tinted it with dyes or pearls: it is in fact to apply a matte clearcoat ! Indeed, it is easy and possible on all epoxy resins that are dry through and sanded with 500 grit paper.
Of course, you must use a quality matt clearcoat, which is equal in hardness to epoxy resin and which will withstand all chemical or mechanical attacks. The resin will keep its pearly or colored effect, but will no longer shine.
As we know, epoxy resins quickly obtain great hardness. In comparison, only certain bodywork varnishes (ceramic clearcoats) or industrial coatings equal this resistance to scratches, shocks, temperature, corrosive products... So, if you plan to apply a matte clearcoat on a epoxy resin, on a worktop or a dining table, then it is better not to take a low-end varnish.
Do you know the extrem 4° anti-scratch matt clearcoat ?
Applied with a paint gun, roller or even a brush, it doesn't matter !
There are very interesting possibilities among matt effects.
Beyond satin, semi-matt or matt effects extreme, there are clearcoats with a "touch" effect of the rubber type, namely rubber clearcoats, or even velvet peach-skin clearcoats, which add to the purely visual sensation.
