Definition : Black Interference*
The Black Interference effect refers to a special coating for car bodywork with the ability to change color.
The name is derived from the English word « black » and the term interference, which is an optical phenomenon of light reflection. Optical interference is the transformation of color (change in light energy level) as a result of « light bounce ».
This atypical body paint was developed and presented to the public in 2015 by the R&D department of StardustColors in France. At the time, the objective was to respond to a request from many customers for a "black chameleon effect", i.e. a color-shifting paint with a transition from black to a specific color, which did not exist anywhere in the world until then.
The existing "colorshift" chameleons can change from one color to another, for example from green to gold, but never from no color, with a deep black that reveals a color with a change of viewing angle.
The important tip for applying this Black Interference car paint :
The product is concentrated, and although it is perfectly transparent, it has a very high yield (L/m²). 1 L allows to paint a complete car.
In order to achieve a beautiful effect with a maximum of pure black on the car paint, it is very important to spray the paint sparingly : in general, one to two coats of very thin paint are sufficient to give an excellent effect on the car.
If too much paint is applied, there is a risk of losing the deep black appearance on the corners of the body.
Since BI paint is translucent, it is necessary to have a background color, in this case black, that is perfectly homogeneous.
So what type of base should be used ? It doesn't matter if it's a 2K paint, a 1K basecoat or a primer, the important thing is that the color is pure black.
If paints and 2K paints easily offer this possibility with a pure and deep black such as RAL 9005, it is not the case with all primers which can be slightly whitish black, and therefore to be avoided !
Similarly, if you decide to use your old black body paint as a « background », make sure it is an opaque black background without any trace of pearl or metallic pigments.
The success of this black interference effect is achieved by introducing a transparent Candy ink used in car paint. This ink remains invisible when applied over a black background, because let's take for example a transparent red applied over black : the result is black. On the other hand, the ink has the power to color the light when a ray bounces on a transparent pearl.
