The thickness of a gold leaf is microscopic: the statue of the Virgin and Child (over 11 m tall) is entirely made of copper gilded with gold leaf. However, less than 500 g of gold were needed.
This artistic process is an art mastered by some specialized craftsmen and dates back to several hundred years. It is used as a finishing decoration on religious ornaments, furniture and architectural ornaments, but also ironwork and statues.
Each product is sold in book of 25 sheets. In bulk or with transfer sheet. « Bulk » books include only the leaves. We collect them with a brush thanks to static electricity. The other books contain « transfer sheets » in addition. These serve as protection but above all they allow you to easily take the fine sheet of metal with your fingers.
Regarding the quality, you will find below 2 versions of real gold leaves (12 or 24 karat) and a model of imitation gold leaf. This one does an excellent job because it is so alike with a real gold leaf that you can’t tell them apart. These much cheaper imitation sheets are fine sheets of copper-based and zinc-based metal.
This ancestral art of gilding with gold leaf, has been continued by the artists of motorcycle customization. The technique is indeed completely transferable to the bodywork field. The gilding glue for bodywork gives an authentic and original touch, moreover it creates effects which one can hardly reproduce in painting.
Gilding on tanks, fairings or even motorcycle helmets, is most often applied using masking, adhesives, or even lines made by "pinstriping". Additional effects of circular motions can be made on gold leaf with velvet pads. You can find 3 application methods explained in the product page.
In the traditional and artisanal domain, gilding glues are sometimes called mixtion. In this category below, you will find gold leaf glue from Pébéo, which is excellent and can also be used for gilding on bodywork.
You can apply the glue with an airbrush or a spray gun, because it is very liquid, or even with a pinstriping brush to make lines.
It is not recommended to use "homemade" products or varnishes, because either the drying is too fast and the leaf does not stick, or on the contrary the product does not dry under the gold leaf.
