These are concentrated products, intended to modify or improve the particular properties of a paint or varnish. You have to incorporate them in small quantities.
When formulating and manufacturing, or even when using a paint or varnish, solutions may be needed in liquid form or as a dry film to correct defects, improve behavior, consistency or to improve product properties.
In the formulation world, additives reinforce resins, solvents, and dyes, by helping model and create high-performance products, while in the application of bases and bodywork varnishes, they facilitate use, increase the resistance or adapt the product to a support.
Various additives have been designed by chemists and research and development laboratories of paint manufacturers. Traditional paint additives are matting agents, rheology modifiers (thickeners or thinners), dispersants, wetting agents, defoaming agents, flex agents, hardeners, co-resins ...
With regards to solvent-based or water-based formulas, the paint may foam under the effect of stirring, or after the addition of an ingredient. Consequently, it can no longer be properly applied or conditioned. A defoaming additive is then used to miraculously remove all the foam at a concentration of 1/1000.
In the same way, a paint can be too liquid, and therefore start to flow when the user wants to apply it. Thickeners can be used to increase the thickness of the paint in its liquid form.
Wetting additives: to allow liquid paints to be applied evenly over the surface, we need a product that « wets » well and removes the « surface tension ».
They help modify and improve the final qualities of the paint after drying. The “dry film” can thus be made more flexible (Stardust flex agents) or harder and more scratch-resistant.
In the same way, one can obtain a less shiny dry paint with the matifying additives that StardustColors offers.
In order to block the heat (infrared) or to block the destructive effects of light (ultraviolet), we can add absorbing and blocking additives. For example, the anti-UV additive we offer helps protect colors over time.
